WFM Cassandra Lim is a passionate chess coach who has been playing since the age of five. As the top-rated female Under 20 in Australia, she was invited to play in the 2020 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, alongside Australian GMs and WGMs. In 2020, the Australian Chess Federation presented Cassandra with the Arlauskas Medal & Award – which is awarded to the Australian Under 16 Player of the Year.Cassandra has represented Australia in numerous international chess tournaments, including the World Youth Chess Championships (South Africa 2014, Greece 2015, Uruguay 2017) and the 2019 Oceania Zonal tournament held in Auckland, New Zealand, where she obtained her Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title. In Australia, Cassandra has competed in numerous national and state championships, having won the Under 18 Australian Girls Championship (2018) and the Under 18 Victorian Girls Championship (2016), as well as claiming numerous other age-group Victorian, Australian and Blitz titles over the years.Cassandra was Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) Chess Captain in 2021 and PLC Chess Champion from 2016 to 2021. She competed on Board 1 for PLC each year, with the school winning the Australian Schools Teams Chess (ASTC) Championships for a record six years consecutively.Cassandra’s achievements and her experiences locally and abroad, have not only given her a unique perspective on what it means to compete in chess at the highest levels, but also how to thrive under pressure and build resilience. As a chess coach, Cassandra is engaging, motivational, and focused on helping students achieve their very best in their game whilst ensuring that sessions are interactive and interesting. Classes are tailored to the individual and are directed at improving specific areas of their game, whether it be analysing the deeper ideas behind opening theory, strengthening middlegame play, or exploring endgame strategies.Cassandra is a Chancellor’s Scholar at The University of Melbourne, where she is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Biomedicine, after which she will complete the Doctor of Medicine program. In addition to private coaching, she is currently coaching chess at Scotch College.
