School Coaching Program

Dark Horse Chess runs school coaching programs across numerous primary and secondary schools in Victoria. Our classes facilitate children learning chess and improving their skills in fun, encouraging, and engaging environment.

We pride ourselves on having sensational chess coaches who are experienced working with young people, are both fantastic teachers and role models.

School Coaching Program Results

We have coached many schools to victory in both the Victorian and Australian Primary and Secondary Schools Championship.

National winning teams we have coached include:

  • Presbyterian Ladies’ College (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019)
  • Deepdene Primary School (2010 and 2011)
  • Scotch College (2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012, runners up in 2019)
  • Balwyn High School (2006 and 2007)

School Coaching Program Information

Our School Coaching Program provides students with the opportunity to participate in weekly chess classes to learn all about chess – from the basics to advanced strategies and tactics. 

Students have the chance to learn a new skill each week and to practice applying the skills learned in fun games with other members of their group.

Our program is suitable for all levels, from absolute beginners to top-level junior players.

Sessions are generally held at the following times:

  • Before school
  • Lunchtime
  • After school

School chess classes typically run for 50 minutes.

In addition to our standard term-long chess program, Dark Horse Chess also offer the following:

  • Half or full-day chess incursions
  • Specialised small-group training
  • Integrating chess into the school curriculum

Fees

Our fees  for standard School Chess Classes is $16 per child per class (inc. GST), with a minimum of 9 children in a class.

FAQ

We also offer a full-day chess incursion, which is a popular option for schools who would like to provide all students with a ‘taster’ of chess. We can also integrate chess lessons into the school curriculum, or provide specialised small-group coaching for students preparing for a particular tournament.

Yes, all of our coaches have an up-to-date WWCC. In addition, our coaches are well-versed in Child Safe policies, OH&S, and are aware and responsible individuals.
